Because I Can

Last night, I decided to make my famous Kimchi Fried Rice!

Okay fine, it’s not famous. And it’s the first time I tried to cook it. Maybe 2-3 years from now it will be. THEN I can erase this annoying little side note (heehee).

ANYWAY. That was an achievement since I don’t really cook. Everyone else in my family does – and believe me, they make excellent food. No kidding. I’m like, “Why don’t we open our own restaurant business?”

During big events and celebrations, they’re all bustling around the kitchen, making fancy dishes like Truffle Oil Pasta, Braised Lamb with Red Wine Sauce, Roast Beef, or Crème brûlée, while I take charge of menial tasks like grocery shopping, chopping vegetables, setting the table, and washing the dishes. Sometimes, to comfort myself, I take on the extra role of Ambience Creator/Musical Director, which basically means getting my iPod and putting together a special playlist for the meal.

I know – I’m awesome. Hahaha joke.

But last night, I was craving for Kimchi Fried Rice and since I didn’t want to spend anymore, I decided to make my own. \/\/ ( ) \/\/! Ang galing galing talaga ni Trish. :))

Yeah, it isn’t a big deal, but I’m actually pretty proud of myself. I think I surprised everyone else in the family too because they all think I can’t cook. Well, you know what I told them?

“Just because I don’t cook doesn’t mean I can’t.”

NAKS. Nyahahaha! Nakakainis. Before I gloat some more, here’s a photo of my masterpiece:

Hahaha annoying much? Okay I’ll stop with the Kimchi Fried Rice.

I’m just genuinely happy because I get to do nice things for my family now. The past few weeks, I’ve been agonizing over the problem of what to do with all this free time. I hate being idle. I hate sitting around and not experiencing anything. I like being productive. That’s why I’ve been out and about, talking to different people, asking advice on how to write a blog, make my own traveling show, get more freelance work, organize my portfolio, etc.

And the one thing I’ve gained from all this is: quit planning and start doing. Get out there and make things happen!

I met up with a friend the other day. She runs her own blog called Wanderrgirl and has this vision of using “creativity as a tool for nation-building.” She’s amazing. I asked her, “How do I make a blog?” And she said, “Just start writing.” Most people get stuck in the ideation phase, focusing on what the blog will be about or what the branding will be, that they fail to take it to the next level. Others start it up, but then forget to update it regularly – their posts just sort of peter out.

Make things happen. It’s simple, right? American artist Andy Warhol once said: “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

I need to stop wasting my time waiting for things to fall on my lap. Waiting for the right opportunity, waiting for the right people, waiting for my big break. Nothing good comes out of overstaying in The Waiting Place. Make. Things. Happen.

Keep creating and bringing mind-blowing stuff into this world!

And that’s why I write. And apparently, cook.

Because I can, and I will.

I just ruined that ending, didn’t I? Sorry I’m not a very serious person. I’ll try harder not to joke next time. Haha! Cheers! 😉
