On meeting Lang Dulay, the famous dreamweaver of Lake Sebu, Cotabato: I wanted to take a photo of her hands, but when I motioned for her to lay them out, she shook her head and instead hid them in the folds of her beautifully patterned blouse. She muttered something to her granddaughters, who were sitting across from us (she couldn’t speak in Tagalog or English), and I was afraid I had offended her. But they giggled and, seeing the worried expression on my face, explained in Tagalog, “She said her hands are ugly. She wasn’t able to put cutics today.”
