“You got one!”
I jerk it upward, and at the last minute, it pulls free and swims away happily. I look at the empty hook somberly. My companions laugh and, all throughout our unsuccessful fishing trip, joke about the one that got away.
There were few fishes in the sea that afternoon, so we spent more time talking than actually catching something.
Incidentally, kawil also means “to connect.”
